Lines on your face don't bother me
Down in my chair when you dance over me
I can't help myself
I've got to see you again
Late in the night when I'm all alone
And I look at the clock and I know you're not home
I can't help myself
I've got to see you again
I could almost go there
Just to watch you be seen
I could almost go there
Just to live in a dream
But no I won't go for any of those things
To not touch your skin is not why I sing
I can't help myself
I've got to see you again
I could almost go there
Just to watch you be seen
I could almost go there
Just to live in a dream
No I won't go to share you with them
But oh even though I know where
you've been
I can't help myself
I've got to see you again

This song is very much written about a guy who has fallen in love with a stripper. First off, the song was written by the guitar player who is a man. Second, listen to and read the lyrics. I don't see why people can't accept that it is a song about a stripper. I've worked the door and as a bouncer at several strip clubs for many years, IT'S ABOUT A STRIPPER.

I always felt like this song was from the female point of view...about a guys who is older (maybe married) who isn't good for her...that their relationship is a secret...myabe because when this song came out i was in a relationship like that!! LOL!!!

sure some people may think its about a stripper. but when you really delve deep into the song you find a little more there

This is definitely about a dancer/stripper.
Again you have to remember a guy wrote this song.
"Lines on your face don't bother me"
Probably talking about an older girl, possibly shows signs of wrinkles... but he doesn't care about those lines.
"Down in my chair when you dance over me"
This give is away early on in the song.
This guy went to a strip bar, saw this girl. He genuinely fell in love with her (not in the horny perverted way), but actually fell in love with her.
He wants to see her again so bad, but as a person, not a stripper, outside the life of the strip bar... that’s why he won't go back there. ... that’s why he won't go back to the strip bar to watch her be seen.
"I could almost go there
Just to watch you be seen
I could almost go there
Just to live in a dream"
The reference to the dream is that this is an erotica world, a fantasy for most men. Fantasy = A Dream.
"Late in the night when I'm all alone
And I look at the clock and I know you're not home"
This one is obvious... she's working nights. That’s why she's not home.
"No I won't go to share you with them
But oh even though I know where
you've been
I can't help myself
I've got to see you again"
He won't be able to stand not having her all to himself, sharing her with other guys, that why he wants to be alone with her (again not at the bar though). And even though this girl is a stripper and has been around, he knows this girl has probably seen some crazy times with many men, he hates that idea of her being with so many people, but he still can't help but care for her and wants to see her again.
I hope this helps,
EdGe7

It's about a stripper. Trust me. But it's awesome to see so much creativity going into this.

I think this song was written for an American girl who went to Honduras on a mission trip. She lived with a native family for 52 days while down there. There was a 21 year old boy in the family with whom she lived with. She herself was 20 years old. The girl and boy became best friends. When she came back to the USA, she realized her deep love for him, and he realized his deep love for her. At this very moment, she would give anything to see him again. He always tells her that she misses him. He always asks when he'll be able to see her again. She told him, "in heaven," because she doesn't know if God will call her back to Honduras again. Secretly, she knows that she one day shall see him on earth....she has faith that she will. She told him that even if he is 81, and she is 80....they might have to wait that long to see each other again. She won't mind the wrinkles on his face. She will wait as long as it takes to see him again. This man has fallen in love with another girl from the USA, and it hurts so badly, but Raquel will do anything to see her best friend, even if it means waiting 60 years for it, even if it means staying single forever, and remaining pure forever, even if he doesn't. Even if he goes after many girls, she doesn't care. Even if he is more experienced in life than she is, she would give anything to see his face again.

I vote stripper theory -- seems obvious.

Well guys, you must all be very pure in thought and deed. It is crystal clear that this song was written by a man who has an obsession with a cyber porn model. He can "watch her be seen" by the others on line in free chat. She can "dance over him" (and others) in private chat. It is all like a dream and it is all real. Sometimes very strong relationships are formed between the girls and their customers. Late at night when he's all alone he knows she's not home because she is at the studio working. And he will go back to private chat with her, not free chat, even though he knows that she has been in private doing whatever she is asked to do on camera for others all day.........he will go back to see her again. He must! It has to be an older man who has dough and is frustrated with his life and for whatever reason doesn't go out locally for passion. Trust me on this one there are many that fit this description, and the internet feeds the fire.

This is one of the most sensual songs I've heard. I rank it at the same place with "Turn Me On".
I don't know about the stripper thing. My intepretation is that it's a young schoolgirl who has a crush on some 30-going-on-forty-but-still-sexy guy, maybe a teacher?
Hey, why not? She could sit in her chair in class, watching the teacher and fantasising. And it's a taboo issue for a relationship of any kind to happen, but it's probably a one-sided love anyway.
Well, whatever it is, it's charged with passion and is something I would love to slow-dance to anytime.

i think shes singing this song to a man whos going through kind of a mid life crisis and hes cheating on her with some 18 year old. not that norahs old but whatever. thats where "lines on your face dont bother me" comes from, like hes old and worried about it but she doesnt care, she just loevs him. the dancing just means hes on her mind. and also that she knows hes cheating and he says hes at the office or something and she knows hes really cheating on her. and the most important part of the song, the last stanza saying she knows where hes been but she doesnt care, shes got to see him again anyway.
or it could be an old stripper.

Why does it have to be about a man that she's talking about? Why can't it be a woman? It's very interesting the way everyone has their own view on what the song it about. I have read most of the comments on here and they all seem reasonable...but why can't it be a woman she's singing about? Food for thought.

I think that it is very possibly for a stripper. But I think that she has a tempestuous relationship with said stripper. Not a far away obsesion. It says that she could ALMOST GO THERE to watch him be seen.....not that she does. There-for i think that she loves and needs this person even though he is in a relationship killing profesion. Again she loves this person and needs them like she needs air....and even though she hates what he does she still need, wants and has to be near him (even though i know where you've been....I've got to see you again.)

All I know is that when your lover stands by you and you 're overwhelmed and carried away by that feeling called love, it seems as though he/she is dancing. Every move, every single little action seems like part of a dance. YOUR dance. Definately the best song of the album!!!
Greetings from Greece :o)

People, you must remember that, according to the top of this page, this song was written by Jesse Harris, which would make more sense to think that it might have been written with a stripper in mind--the last stanza seems to say so... and here I am totally guessing, that the lines would be due to the relative hardship that strippers live while trying to make a living in smoke-filled bars and exposed to all kinds of... mind you that I do not want to take away from the beauty and talent displayed in this song by Norah...

Wow, one of my fav fav songs. So much passion and obsession, yes sensuality too. So true. And the atmosphere the music arrangment creates is so darkly unique and deep.

I got this cd a while ago and had actually listened to it a couple of times...one night while studying i just decided to listen to it again and that was when "i've got to see you again" hit me like a bolt and i must have played that track over 30 times [no exaggeration]...i'm sure i drove my neighbours crazy but i really didn't care because i literally could not stop myself....and it's been like that for a few months now....that song is just sooo sensual and sexy and just gets to me.

HOW ABOUT A TV PERSONALITY?? "lines over yer face" BAD RECEPTION. "I could almost go there Just to watch you be seen I could almost go there Just to live in a dream" she could really go there but she could imagine herself there in a dream. But the show is like a guilty pleasure and she doesnt want anyone else to know she watches it. I dunno just an inference something for you guys to think about

I SEE SOMETHINGS IN THIS SONG,BUT I DON'T BELIEVE THAT IS THE STORY WITH A STRIPER!IN MY OPINION,IT'S THE DIFFICULT-EVEN TRAGIC-STORY OF A GIRL WITH AN ATHLETE,AND PARTICULARY A BOXER,WHO DOES HIS SHOW IN THE RING BEFORE COMBAT,AS TRADITIONALLY IN THIS SPORT:"WHEN YOU DANCE OVER ME".THEIR STORY SEEMS COMPLICATED;HE FIGHTS REGULARY AND SHE IS ALONE"late in the night when i'm all alone".THE GIRL IS DIVIDED BETWEEN THE DESIRE TO GO TO SEE HIM AND THE FACT THAT HE FIGHTS AND IT'S VERY VIOLENT,AND SHE HATES IT;BUT SHE COULD ALMOST THERE,SHE HAS GOT TO SEE AGAIN.MOREOVER,"LINES" DO REFERENCE TO PUNCHES DUE BY THE COMBAT BUT THAT DOESN'T BOTHER HER.

Instead of reading deeper into the words, I decided to take a more literal perspective. For me this song is about a woman who is slightly obsessed with a male entertainer (i.e, singer, dancer). She has been very intrigued with this man for many years and finds that time intensifies her intrigue with this individual (lines on your face don't bother me). I can see her faithfully attending many of his concerts over the years, feeling as though she has a real connection with him...fantasizing that she really knows him and that he knows her. Of course the reality is that he is unaware of her existence. After each show she may be tempted to join the fanatics who surround him, but she doesn't. She feels as though her restraint is what separates her from them. Her restraint is what makes 'what they have' even more sacred.

for me, this song is about young woman loving much older married man, it,s very sexy and sensual, one of the best songs i have ever heard. Very true!!

i really didnt like this song so much when i first heard it, its one of those songs that only with time i began to understand.
i fell in love with it, i cant stop playing it now, could she be any better????
yes she can.
i think its about loving an older married man.
a stripper??? i dont think so...
2003-08-14 07:23:46 - Laterose
I think it's just simply a song about someone who loves somebody so much, possibly someone older, and is so desperate to see them, but for some reason just can't. It breaks my heart, but it is the best track on the album

IM MOVING AWAY FROM HIM. To Florida-- this tragic thing is moving me away from the love of my life... and I have to see him one more time. We both cried about it! Whenever I listen to this song I think of us crying and him holding me.... I know on the whole trip over I will cry as I listen to the song. But it comforts me too. "My allie, Paulie..." I will see you again in two very long years; I know I have the strength. My love will guide me back to you. For the love we have.... @;-

As with any song, I think that the meaning is always very personal. Often times, we see things in it that the writer/performer never intended. This song is very sensual indeed. I don't think anyone would argue about that. For me, it has come to be about an old lover (not older, just a former love). I recently got in contact with an old high school crush who now lives in a different country. I would love to see him again. The line, "when you dance over me" is not a literal representation of a stripper to me, but a poetic way of talking about how you see someone in your dreams or memories. Often when we remember people that we were fond of, our memories are romanticized. Their movements are graceful and slow...almost like dancing. The song doesn't have to be about sex or even jealousy, but just that one moment in time in which you can see an old friend and talk and enjoy each other with no other distractions.

I can see where people are coming from with the stripper thing, and partly i am with that, due to the words and the way it moves and the sexyness shown in this song. i'm only 16 and i havent had much experience with strippers tho :P so i can't totally relate to it.
For me this song is about someone who has possibly loved and lost, and the lover has obviously found someone else but is still loved by this other person and he/she would do anything to see that person again. Jealousy is the word that comes to mind when i listen to this song and read the lyrics:
"No I won't go to share you with them"
This person is quite evidently pining over the ex lover and wants him/her back and cant bare to see him/her with the other family as he/she sees this person as theirs!
2003-07-21 13:30:04 - Mari
This song reminds me of the man that I love with all my heart. He and I are married, but our hearts belong to each other. No matter what happens, "I've got to see you again" because my heart belongs to you now and always.
2003-07-16 18:06:41 - tanis
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the song being written for a stripper - if that's why some of you have a difficult time accepting that point of view, or if that perspective bothers you. I could break this song down piece by piece and explain why it's more a song for a stripper than an older, married man, but I don't think it's really necessary. Coz.. well, just read the lyrics over again. ;)

all you guys saying this song is about a stripper is killing me. geez. see, my boyfriend (no, he's not married) and i live 5 hours apart so this song is a favorite of mine right now. I agree with Welle.

This is one of my least favorites on the album...I wonder why, hah. But it's still a good song. The way Norah sings, makes not so good songs, into great ones. I could listen to her voice for hours, don't you agree?

Ever hear a song and think it had to be written just for you? This song reminds me of the man I'm seeing, the19-years-older-than-me-and-married-man. The lines on his face don't bother me - I just wish I could be with him now! (Instead of his wife having that pleasure and not appreciating it.)
2003-06-20 09:37:38 - welle
It's funny how most people saw a stripper in this song - why take everything so literally? It is the most poetic and saddest song on this album. For me, it's a story of a woman, who is having an affair with a married man (older if you like). Every night she sits at home alone, while he's with his family, so she can't help herself and sneaks around his house and watches him with his wife, imagining herself being with him - "living in a dream". To add more tragedy, maybe he is gay?
As Ziyqo, I also put it on 'repeat' and play this song in continuous loop - it just breaks my heart.

It works for both, to a woman and to a man.

This is definitely a man singing to his dancer (ya, ok, if you want to use the term "stripper"!) friend...ahhh, escaping to the local strip club can be a very romantic pasttime....
2002-11-18 02:30:45 - lulupallooza
This song is about two lovers who are apparently split apart by something tragic. I imagine he's married and she, she just wants to be with him even though he's obviously got someone else in his life.
