Above Ground

Above Ground
© Andrew Borger/Daru Oda

Underground I'm waiting
Just below the crowded avenue
Watchin' red lights fading out of view

Oh the air feels heavy
Everything just passes by
And I think that I'm a little shy

Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday

Drawing lines above my head
But the fan keeps spinning over me
Just my thoughts to keep me company

Now I know I'm ready
Pour the night into a glass
Can I sip it slow and make it last?

Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday

Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday

It's a bar/cafe in Grand Central - underground in the subway. He goes there every day, perhaps commuting. He sees her every day in the underground. He doesn't have the guts to approach her. He dreams of following her "above ground" where someday they might meet - if he or he had the guts. He wishes "someday" they'll meet above ground.

Story of a girl committing suicide in order to be with someone in heaven someday.

I totally agree. This is one of the greatest songs I know - music and lyrics also go perfectly together. It was written by Andrew Borger (Drums) and Daru Oda (Backing Vocals).

Listen to the version of this song on the DVD "Norah Jones and the handsome band". It has so much raw energy with two great solos by Levy and Mcintosh and a great as usual performance by borger. Wonderful, has to be one of my favourites on the second album.

Norah was born and raised in NYC....correct?

Anyone else see this as a salute to the City and it's life.....

writen from the point of veiw of a bartender or patron that longs for the streets of the city and to get out from the dingy smoky (at least back when smoking was allowed) bar....I don't know just a thought, i guess....

OMG, when I first heard this song, I fell in love.

"Pour the night into a glass
Can I sip it slow and make it last?"

Those are some of the most vibrant images I've ever heard in a song! I love it!
